INFLAMMATION

When exposed to foreign compounds and pathogens, our body activates an immune response to help neutralize the threat.  This immune response is essential to health and when functioning properly the response will cease once the threat has been removed.  However, when the response lingers chronic inflammation occurs.  Chronic Inflammation leads to progression of diseases such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, and autoimmune disorders.

Our gastrointestinal system plays a vital role in regulation of our immune response.  The cell walls of the gastrointestinal tract contain 70 percent of the immune system.  The interplay between the gastrointestinal tract and our immune system is constant and far reaching.  When functioning properly the epithelial cells that line the gastrointestinal track form a protective barrier and regulate what is allowed across their surface into the body through tight junctions and receptor mediated entry.  This prevents unwanted substances (i.e. bacteria, proteins, viruses, etc.) from entering our body.  Various factors can influence this regulation and when the system becomes faulty the cells become permeable.  This condition is often referred to as leaky gut or gut permeability.  When unwanted compounds cross over the epithelial cells the immune system quickly responds.  If gut permeability is not corrected it can lead to chronic inflammation and food sensitivities.

Free Radicals and Immune Response

Another common activator of our immune system are free radicals.  These compounds damage tissues, cells, and DNA, resulting in oxidative stress and inflammation.  Free radicals are produced by normal body functions as well as environmental sources such as smoking, BPA, pesticides etc.  As you can imagine, we are constantly bombarded with free radicals.  To help fight back, our bodies produce some antioxidants, but we must consume a diet rich in antioxidant foods to help bring balance to our system and decrease free radical damage and inflammation.  Remember to consume 7 to 10 servings of vegetables and fruits along with nutrient dense spices, and herbs daily!
